This Drop Cloth Pillow is From the Heart

I’ve been wanting to make a drop cloth pillow for a while, and I thought these sweet farmhouse ticking hearts would be cute for Valentine’s and beyond. I made a couple of pillows this summer with stitched lettering and a ready-made pillow covers, but using fusible webbing made this so easy.

The pom-poms are my latest obsession. I have them hanging on my mantel and on another pillow (post coming soon!) for the living room.

Drop Cloth Pillow

I made it for inside, but I thought the lumbar shaped pillow worked so well on the blue porch swing Jeff made from an old bed. It’s my best thinking and relaxing spot. Just add hot tea and a good book. Ahh.

Let’s Make a Pillow!

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Drop cloth, cut 2 pieces to 15″ x 29″
  • Pins
  • Iron
  • EZ Steam sheets
  • Pink ticking fabric
  • Heart pattern
  • Pillow form, 14″ x 28″
  • White DMC floss
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • 4 pom poms (yarn + pom-pom maker), optional

Prep Drop Cloth

Cut two pieces of 15″ x 29″ pieces of drop cloth, iron the cloth and use a lint roller to remove any strings or lint.

Prep + Cut Fabric Hearts

First, peel the backing off the EZ steam sheet. Next, press and smooth onto the wrong side of your square of fabric. Then, trace a heart with a pencil on the grid backing. Cut around the heart. Repeat the process for each heart.

Place + Iron Hearts

Once you have your heart cutouts, peel the grid backing off and place them on the drop cloth fabric. I had my middle heart overlap both of the outer hearts. Press with an iron, according to the package directions, using a thin cloth between your hearts and the iron.

Stitch, Pin + Sew

For a quaint, farmhouse look, stitch small X’s around each heart. Place the right sides of your fabric together and pin around the edges, leaving about 10″ in the bottom center so you’ll be able to turn your pillow cover. Stitch using a sewing machine all around the edges (except for the 10″ space at the bottom), using a 1/2″ seam.

Turn your pillow and iron the seams. Next, insert your pillow into the bottom opening and carefully fit it into each corner of the pillow cover.

Sew the bottom opening up using an invisible stitch. If you’re not familiar, here’s a great tutorial for how to hand sew an invisible stitch.

How to Make Pom Poms (optional)

You don’t have to add pom-poms, but (as mentioned) I’m a bit pom-pom obsessed at the moment. They are so quick and easy to make. Aren’t they fun?

Drop Cloth Pillow

Let me show you how simple it is to make them. First, wrap around the pom pom maker and snap it closed. Next, snip yarn inside the groove and around the circle. Tie a piece of the yarn inside the groove and carefully remove the pom-pom from the plastic circle. Tighten the yarn again and knot.

Trim your pom-pom if needed in any spots, and repeat until you have four pom-poms. Lastly, sew by hand to each corner of the pillow.

Drop Cloth Pillow

Place it in your favorite snuggly spot and make yourself a Valentine Cocktail.
