How to DIY a Mercury Glass Mini Mason Jar Ornament

I’m gonna start with two favorites: MASON JARS + THINGS THAT ARE MINI! I had no idea these even existed until my friend Jennifer told me about them (thanks Jenn!). I have been wanting to try this Mercury glass technique and had instant visions of DIY Mercury glass mini mason jar ornaments.

What do you think?

Let me show you how simple this is

Supplies

Here’s what you’ll need: Krylon Looking Glass spray paint in silver; Ball mini mason jars (4 oz), ribbon, jute twine, paper to cover your jar, clear bond Gorilla Glue, a homemade tool for blotting your paint (directions below), small battery-powered votive, and a spray bottle with two parts water, one part white vinegar.

First, make a simple dabber out of a straw, rubber band and a small piece of an old t-shirt (you could also a small piece of a paper towel in place of a t-shirt).

Next, cover the outside of the mason jar in paper. You only want to spray the inside– this will keep the shine of the glass on the outside.

Let’s get started!

Shake your spray paint as directed on the can and spray very lightly into the inside of the jar. You’re going to do this in layers.

The jars are really small, so the paint may “puddle” a bit. Tip the jar and roll it around to distribute the excess paint. You can use the blotter to dab any remaining off the bottom. Let the paint set a little, maybe 5 minutes or so.

Lightly spritz your vinegar/water mixure just a couple times into the jar, to get the look you want. This will make random bubbles in the paint. Then, use your dabber and blot in random spots inside the glass. This will move the paint around and give the Mercury glass effect. Let it dry a little, then do 2-3 coats repeating the process until you have the look you want.

You can see how small the jars are– they fit in the palm of my hand.
Here’s the inside of the jar. Tip: make sure your votive fits!

Embellish and attach jute twine

Wrap a piece of ribbon long enough for a bow around the jar top. Before tying the bow, tie and knot your jute twine to the ribbon. This will become the ornament hanger. Add a dot of clear Gorilla Glue to each knot to secure.

Then tie your bow tightly!

This is what your diy mercury glass mini mason jar ornament should look like.

Drop in your votive and hang it on the tree.

You could also do this with pint or larger mason jars and use them for your mantel or table. Large ones would be gorgeous on a snowy porch used as luminaries!

These mini mason jars are great for spices, crafting, organizing. I have some other ideas up my sleeve…stay tuned!

I love this so much. I’m going to follow your technique and make some for my table. You do it as I was planning yet I hadn’t seen the straw made into a dauber. So smart! Love it!!

I know, I have had this one on my list for ages too. So many ideas, so little time. I’d love to see your project when you finish it. Thanks Allison!
